Non-stick pans make cooking eggs easy, pancakes painless, and cleaning up a total breeze. It's no wonder they're a kitchen staple. But the safety of non-stick coatings has become a hot topic in recent years, especially when words like PTFE and PFOA get thrown around. So… are non-stick pans toxic? And what should you be looking for if you want something safe, durable, and reliable?
PTFE stands for polytetrafluoroethylene (a mouthful, we know), which is the main ingredient in most traditional non-stick coatings –like the kind used in Teflon pans.
On its own, PTFE isn’t considered harmful when used correctly. But it has a low tolerance for high heat. Once a pan reaches around 260°C or higher, that non-stick coating can start to break down – and that’s when it may release fumes you don’t want in your kitchen.
If you've ever overheated a pan and noticed a weird chemical smell, that’s likely what was happening.
PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) was once commonly used to manufacture PTFE coatings, but it’s no longer used in most cookware today.
Why? Because it’s been linked to long-term health and environmental concerns, and major manufacturers phased it out around 2013. So if your non-stick pans are older than that, it might be time to upgrade.
That said, newer PTFE pans might be “PFOA-free,” but they still carry the same heat sensitivity issue. So while they’re technically safer than older models, they’re still not bulletproof when it comes to high-heat cooking.
Nope! Not all non-stick pans are toxic or unsafe, but it really depends on the material.
The good news is there are now plenty of non-stick pan alternatives on the market that skip the synthetic coatings altogether. Ceramic-coated cookware, like Crumble’s non-stick pans use a mineral-based surface instead.
These coatings are free from PTFE, PFOA, PFAS and leachable lead and cadmium, and they’re baked on rather than chemically bonded. That means no fumes, no weird breakdown at high temps, and no stress if you're cooking something on a medium-to-high heat.
Crumble’s stainless steel and enamel-coated cast iron pans are also both naturally non-toxic and made to last. Our enamel-coated cast iron holds heat like a dream and offers natural non-stick performance over time, while our stainless steel gives you a slick surface without any chemical coatings at all.

Whether or not your non-stock pan is toxic depends on the material. Look for pans free from TFE, PFOA, and PFAS.

Even the safest non-stick pans need a bit of care. Here’s how to keep yours in good shape without damaging the coating:
Crumble’s pans are technically dishwasher-safe, but for best results, we always recommend washing by hand. It only takes a sec, and keeps the non-stick surface performing well for longer.
If you’re still using older PTFE pans, especially ones with scratches or damage, it’s probably time for a rethink. While modern PTFE cookware is safer than it used to be, there’s growing interest in ceramic-coated, PFAS-free alternatives that take the guesswork out of it.
Crumble’s non-stick cookware range is made to be safe, easy to use, and built for real-life cooking – whether you’re flipping eggs on a weekday morning or making a one-pan dinner after work.
