How to Season a Cast-Iron Skillet

Congratulations on snagging your very first Crumble Cast-Iron Skillet (yay!)

Get ready to elevate your cooking game because this isn’t just any pan - it’s your new kitchen sidekick! Unlike regular non-stick pans, cast-iron is naturally non-stick but needs a little extra love to make this magic happen. Before you start whipping up your favourite dishes, let’s dive into some fun steps to season and clean your skillet to perfection!

HOW TO SEASON A CAST IRON SKILLET:

First things first–seasoning! And no, we’re not talking about your favourite herbs and spices. Before your Crumble Skillet makes its debut, it needs a little pre-show pampering. Seasoning is like giving your cast iron a makeover! It gives your Crumble a natural, non-stick cooking surface that helps prevent your pan from rusting. It may require a little extra TLC, but with seasoning, your skillet will last for generations.

STEP 1:
Wash the skillet with warm soapy water.

STEP 2:

Coat with 1 tbsp of oil.

Crumble Tip: Any oil will do the trick, but we recommend low-smoke point oils such as canola, sunflower or vegetable.

STEP 3:

Wipe off residue and bake the skillet in the oven for 1 hour.

Crumble Tip: If you’re low on time, place it over the stove on high heat for a minute or two.

STEP 4:

Allow to cool before repeating 2-3 times and viola!

WHAT NOT TO DO WITH YOUR SKILLET

We wish we could promise that your cookware will stay as shiny as the day you unboxed it, but with regular use, it will develop some character in the form of stubborn stains. Here’s five easy ways to keep your Crumble Skillet brand spankin’ new!

No soaking:

We get it! After a marathon cooking session, the last thing you want to do is scrub away at your skillet but soaking cast-iron is a one-way ticket to Rustville. Instead tackle those stubborn stains with our quick cleaning method and you’ll be kicking back for your well deserved Netflix marathon in no time!

No abrasive cleaning tools or soaps:

Always pamper your skillet with soft sponges and gentle cleaning agents that won’t scratch or degrade your enamel and cast-iron.

Crumble tip: if it feels rough on your skin, it’s definitely too harsh for your Crumble!

No dishwashing:

As much as we love shortcuts when it comes to cleaning, remember that each time you use your skillet, it builds a natural layer of seasoning. Skip the dishwasher to keep that layer intact so you can enjoy your non-stick pan for a lifetime!

Not seasoning:

While it’s tempting to dive right in and cook up your favourite dish straight out of the box, using an unseasoned pan can lead to sticky situations, rust, and other pesky problems. But don’t worry—we’ve got your back! Follow our easy step-by-step guide to get your skillet in top shape, so you can start cooking with confidence.

Looking after cast-iron can be a real pain in the (you know what…) but fear not! With these tips you’re one step closer to a lifetime kitchen companion. Got some lingering questions?
